The 2022 SBS documentary “Rebecca In Wonderland” features my 2021 KSS meeting, where I used my research to identify KSS files based on my decoding of all first-digit KSS K-Number codes.

The 2022 SBS documentary “이상한 나라의 레베카" / “Rebecca In Wonderland” includes footage shot by my independent filmmaker friend who was present at the meeting, along with Associated Press (AP) reporter Tong-hyung Kim (pictured at bottom).

The footage from my 2021 meeting at KSS, which was included in the 2022 SBS documentary about my investigation into my and my likely twin sister’s separate switch cases, precedes by over two full years the later January 1st, 2023 plagiarism attempt against my original KSS K-Number research, which I conducted between 2020-2021.

This 2021 footage and the December 24th, 2022 release of the SBS documentary about my case precedes the plagiaristic claims of an individual whose affiliates continue to seek false credit for my KSS K-Number research, which I unfortunately shared with this NON-Adoptee individual in confidence in February 2022. I never expected to have to fight him for credit for my own work for years ever since.

During my 2021 meeting, KSS’ then Director confirmed to me the first digit KSS K-Number codes which I had decoded between 2020-2021 during the course of my investigation of my twin’s switch case.

I was hoping to find my and my twin sister’s REAL KSS files through what I knew from my own research of KSS’ K-Number and Child Number systems, since my likely twin sister and I are both switched — though not with each other.

Unfortunately, KSS’ Director did not find my or my twin’s REAL files in KSS’ file room in 2021. However, she DID confirm the first digit KSS K-Number codes for its Partner Western Adoption Agencies, and she did confirm my original finding that KSS K-Number codes REPEATED in the 1970s.

I am therefore the only person who originally and completely decoded KSS’ K-Numbers, between 2020-2021.

I had also known since January 2021 that children were being assigned encoded KSS K-Numbers at the ORPHANAGE level — at least at Nam Kwang Orphanage in Busan.

Would be plagiarists of my work, when confronted by others that decoding KSS K-Numbers was my original research, attempted to defend their plagiarism attempts by saying that what was important about KSS K-Numbers was not that they were encoded in the first digit, but that in doing so, KSS was pre-destining children to be adopted to KSS’ Partner Western Adoption Agencies within an illegal timeline. However, I already knew that children were being assigned encoded KSS K-Numbers at its feeder orphanage Nam Kwang Orphanage in Busan as of January 2021. In other words, I already knew that KSS was pre-destining children almost immediately upon intake (whether at KSS or at the feeder orphanage level) for adoption through its Partner Western Adoption Agencies. Therefore, nothing of what the plagiarists tried to claim as “their own research” has any basis in truth.

Disgustingly, these plagiarists simply sought credit for my work as they wanted to be the only activists who received any spotlight in the media.

My KSS K-Number research was never meant to be public. The KSS Adoptee community kept it secret for three years. I only made it public in 2023 when others attempted to take FALSE CREDIT for my work.

It has been an exhausting battle ever since — and one which I definitely did NOT need on top of having to try to solve my own and my deceased twin sister’s separate switch cases.

My KSS K-Number research has been recognized three times by journalists.

I am not sure why I keep having to defend my officially Copyrighted KSS K-Number research against would-be plagiarists.

The 2022 SBS Documentary "이상한 나라의 레베카" / “Rebecca In Wonderland” includes footage of my 2021 meeting at KSS in Seoul, during which I ask KSS’ Director to locate specific files of children with specific K-Numbers and Child Numbers, based on my original KSS K-Number research. I had solved all KSS first digit KSS K-Number codes by 2021.

“A South Korean adoptee needed answers about the past. She got them — just not the ones she wanted”

“(Rebecca) Kimmel threw herself into examining the complex numerical system KSS used to log adoption cases, based on hundreds of case numbers she collected from other KSS adoptees. In 2021, she revisited the agency with a long wish list of files.”

Film stills from this 2021 meeting at KSS are included at the top of this post.

Public acknowledgment of my KSS K-Number research by Alice Hutton of “The Guardian” comes on the 51st anniversary of my deceased twin sister’s first day of intake to KSS in Seoul.

Alice Hutton of “The Guardian” writes:

“First up is Rebecca Kimmel, who is in Korea at the (IKAA) conference in Seoul, and stayed up til midnight to jump on a call with me today when I was post school drop off and not very glam. Kimmel is a Korean American adoptee to the states and co-founder of (Paperslip.org and) @paperslip_adoptee where she documents the fight for Korean adoptees to access files, family, identity and justice. In addition she decoded KSS K-Numbers between 2020-2021 and helped bring to light the systemic practice of ‘switching’ by her Korean Adoption Agency, KSS, and by the other Korean Adoption Agencies. She connected me to multiple interviewees, including Lauren White Gydas and Greg Luce, the founder of @adopteerights the Adoptee Rights Law Center in Minnesota, as well as several adoptees whose details were not eventually included.”
